Super sedan drag race - BMW F90 M5 vs. Mercedes- AMG E63 S vs. Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid

The mid-size luxury performance sedan market has essentially come down to this, drag racing. You can blame the twin turbo V8 motors and their torque necessitating all wheel drive and perhaps Tesla as well who turned the measure of a sports sedan into a 0-60 sprint.

You get three Germans here all with all wheel drive and twin turbo V8's. Even the motors are all similar in displacement and design.

The only car that truly stands apart is the Panamera because it has a dual clutch transmission but also because it is a hybrid. A big, fat, heavy 5130 pound hybrid.

If the point of a hybrid is to be more efficient how is carrying almost 1000 pounds more than the F90 M5 helping in that regard?

Logic aside the electric torque boost helps get the Panamera off the line quickest. It actually wins the drag race and for once we get some complete data from Autocar.

    1/4 mile:

    Panamera: 11.3 @ 124.9
    E63 S: 11.46 @ 126.6
    M5: 11.58 @ 125.8

    1/2 mile:

    Panamera: 17.63 @ 151.8
    E63 S: 17.83 @ 153.7
    M5: 18.1 @ 152.0

The E63 and M5 will be faster than the Panamera at speed where its electric torque boost does not help much and its porky butt hurts it.

It is interesting to note though that the E63 S is quicker and faster in this test than the F90 M5 both in the 1/4 and 1/2 mile.

Looks like the Panamera closed the gap in traps on the m5 in the back half, to me.

Could be the shift point but I'd expect the M5 to win from a roll.

Why was this comparison done with the ultra premium versions of the AMG (S model)and the Porsche (e-hybrid model) but the not the BMW(comp)?
Perhaps they couldn’t get their hands on a m5 competition package press car....if it’s me I wait to film or I film again when the comp car is available to follow up.

Nobody seems to have tested the F90 Comp yet. Few if any press cars I would guess.

c&d driver tested the f90 m5 10.9@129! Many have failed to replicate this.... you think Ferrari cheats, you can be sure that m5 was running ~CP boost....

    Agree with you 500%

    The 60-130's alone tell me it's a 125-126 car...
