Mercedes-Benz may go from supplying Aston Martin with engines to full blown Aston Martin takeover
You likely have heard of the Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz technology sharing agreement. Essentially, Mercedes-Benz steps in to assist Aston Martin with their engine and driveline technology. This is the main area where Aston Martin is lacking with their archaic motors. Mercedes and Aston might get cozier though as Mercedes mulls whether an acquisition of the famed British mark is a good idea. Mercedes-Benz currently owns 5% of Aston Martin.
Mercedes head Dr. Zetsche stated, “This is a fantastic brand, and we are willing to support its further development." Mercedes will already supply the next generation M177 4.0 liter V8 to Aston Martin. The question becomes whether Aston Martin will be able to stand on its own feet or if there is some traction to a buyout of the brand.
The move would make a lot of sense. BMW has Rolls Royce and Volkswagen has the answer in Bentley among other premium brands. Mercedes could potentially add their own British automaker to the mix with the acquisition of Aston Martin.
What will happen? Who knows. If Aston continues to struggle Mercedes could scoop the brand up at a bargain. Aston has the styling and brand name while Mercedes already has the technology. It sounds like the acquisition would work well certainly in theory.

That would be nice though. Then a person could potentially get their Aston Martin serviced at a MB dealership and not have to worry about it not being done right or driving a million miles to get the car serviced.
I love the way Astons look. Just wish they had more bite and power! With MB backing them up we'll have a true super car on our hands!

Good for Aston Martin!! And us (consumers), of course. Yes, continue to make what MB makes - top of the line / true luxury vehicles - and keep taking the fight to BMW-Rolls-Mini, but especially the VW Automotive Group.
(What, like 8-10, maybe 12 brands under them? Well, at least by my last count a couple/few years ago.)
Of course, to what Sticky said, looks good on paper and time will tell.
That said, if the experiences with Chrysler (bad, bad, BAD) and Nissan-Infiniti-Renault (pretty good so far) provided any lessons, I'm optimistic everything will work out just fine.
Kinda like with supplying V12s to Pagani + a bit more collaborating and platform sharing, and - best of all - their psycho technicians and engine builders mixing ideas.
Should make for some even nastier Astons, for sure. Again, see Pagana Zonda and Huayra (sp).
Where's that doggone fingers crossed emoticon when I need it?
