It's the direct injection. Audi has been having issues for years with direct injection. So far the best system is Toyota in the frs that I have seen. It uses a fuel injector but it's placement cleans as it sprays. I believe that's how it works, but if I am wrong correct me. I do know for sure it's the best system out there.

If it's the 1.8T there are plenty of other precautionary maintenance you may want to do, depending on miles.

It's got plenty of miles with a brand new turbo. What maintenance do you recommend? It does have a timing belt....

It clogs the intake ports and valves. I know for sure depending on the circumstances, it requires a full rebuild/cleaning process that is not cheap.

Waterpump with a metal impeller
Timing belt (if this hasn't been replaced, i'd HIGHLY suggest replacing this if you're over 65k miles. preventative on this is key to not having a large maintenance bill)

keeping a set of spare coilpacks on hand are a decent idea. VW coil packs have always been terrible. For the 1.8T a set of 4 will run anywhere from 100-200 depending your engine code. I would have at least 1 spare one though.

Yes it does take a bit of oil. The 2.0T has forged pistons but the 1.8T does not (correct me if I'm wrong) so perhaps pistons + rings would need to be replaced? Are these motors hard on rings?

I'm not too familiar with the 1.8T to be completely honest. But i know oil consumption can be an issue. Generally related to PVC or piston rings. I guess a leakdown test wouldn't hurt.

I've got a little oil leak I need to fix then I'll be able to tell what is actually going on. I don't really care about anything except pistons and rings. If the PCV system is a problem I'll just remove it and run a catch can. I'd rather have to drain a can than burn oil fumes.

For $#@!s sake the previous owner had the turbo replaced and the oil feed line is pinched between another metal hose like WTF. Thank god this is a rant thread but I need a drink now.

Ok. I removed the factory PCV $#@! hoses and fittings and plumbed a couple garden hoses to an empty windshield washer bottle as a temporary catch can. Also, I am now drunk. Woohoo.
