No BMW 8-Series return just yet - Decision 'ways' off on whether to bring back the 8
Remember the BMW Gran Lusso Coupe concept introduced in May of this year? The concept hinted at what a production BMW 8-Series might look like. The 8-Series has no been in production since 1999 meaning over a decade has passed since the last time BMW sold an 8-Series. With the Gran Lusso Concept, the thought of bringing the car back possibly a rival to the Mercedes-Benz CL was tossed around. Despite the successful reception of said concept, the 8-Series will not enter production any time soon.
BMW R&D chief Herbert Diess told Autocar the following, "The Gran Lusso concept was very well received. We’re looking into the possibility of production, but a decision is still a way off.”
Basically the 8-Series may return and BMW may target the Mercedes CL as well as Bentley Continental GT. If BMW determines it will make money for the brand, they will do it. The door is open for an 8-Series return.

I have to say an LS swap makes a ton of sense for 8's.

All they need to do is make a real 6'er (I.e. not 4,000+ lbs) and then rebadge the current 6'er as an 8, turn up the boost, and add refrigerators and other upper-crust features.

Agreed, the next 6 should become more sporty and light-weight while the 8 series takes over as a much more luxurious CL-style coupe. I actually think the 6 series should be a little shorter and have only two seats especially since we now have a 6 Gran Coupe for people who want to actually use the back seats.

There is definitely some overlap between the 6 and the 8. The 8 would have to get even heavier, longer, and bigger. It would also likely have a V12 option then.
