SportAuto tests the M550d and concludes M is just for marketing, 1:19.1 Hockenehim lap and 0-250 km/h acceleration
By now you know that BMW released diesel M models. You should also know that we do not get these fantastic 381 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque models here in the USA. Definitely sad especially when we get fed a constant stream of Efficient Dynamic marketing BS from BMW. We wish this was not a consolation but the performance of the M550d is not as impressive as we hoped it would be.
Autobild hits 0-60 in 5.1 seconds versus the rated 4.7 and hits 200 kph (124 mph) in 19.1 seconds. The E39 M5 is capable of 0-200 kph in the 17-18 second range and the E92 M3 can do it in the 15 second range. So, the 550d starts to fall off past the 100 miler per hour or so as you can see in the video. However, it moves off the line very quickly and would be very tough from a stop. Just as most diesels are.
The car was also tested on the Hockenheim where it put down a 1:19.1 laptime. Not terrible but not impressive either. This puts it in the company of a Mini Cooper John Cooper Works and behind the ML63 AMG which managed a 1:18.9. Behind the previous generation ML63 AMG? How exactly is this an M sedan? It also is only half a second quicker than the previous generation E60 530d. Maybe all that weight and all wheel drive is holding it back a bit? And what happened to the famed BMW 50/50 weight distribution? This car has 53/47.
We like this car and wish it was offered although it is not exactly offering M performance. We do not see the need for the M badge when really the three generation old E39 M5 offers superior performance all around although at worse fuel economy. This car does not need an M badge thrown on it and SportAuto seems to agree titling their review, "M is for Marketing."

It would probably be faster of they shifted earlier. It makes peak hp at 4,000rpm, why shift at 5,500rpm?

Sticky I agree the numbers are a little disappointing but let's not forget it's August and it's hot over there. This alone is holding it back a good bit.
Also it's surely faster then an ML63 on the track, but possibly not with the factory rubber. 245 Michelin Primacy's are getting seriously over worked without a doubt and are holding the car back a lot. Those tires shouldn't be on an "M" even if is a diesel. Kinda sad
What you need to add is the 0-260 of the X5 50d. That thing is a monster of an SUV and i'd love to have one.

The 0-250 acceleration was done in February I believe. The laptime is more recent as is the whole test that was put together featuring all the pieces.
If it isn't faster than an ML63 around the track then it's a joke. The laptime is kind of sad.BRAND NEW IN BOX 991.2 standard/non-pse SPW cat bypass pipe for sale - $899 shipped

It has 245 Michelin Primacy's up front to handle that massively heavy motor and weighs near 5000lbs. Think outside your box

A good car but certainly not ///M badge worthy.

Needs better tires and upgraded FMIC. Let's see if other magazines come up with similarly worse than claimed acceleration.

Guys, you have to consider the "purpose" of this car. The fuel economy will be 2-3x better than of a similarly powered petrol.
BMW does make an M5, if they wouldn't then this would be a weak attempt of producing a super saloon. But this is a super-diesel, it will be fantastic around town, and on long hauls. Who in their right mind would buy this to go tracking?

i drive a tuned 335d that, considering the lower weight and approx. same power output, probably drives even better than a standard m550d.
For me, if you are looking for a fun car with emotions, no matter how many ponies this diesels get, they are alway soulless and not M worth.
Diesels are good for mileage, transporters, family cars(thats mine :-)), long relaxed runs on the highway and this stuff.
But if you need som thrill in a car, buy a high revving petrol engine car. The feelings in there are something really different and you cant compare them. Different purpose.
even a 200 hp petrol car with "just" 7000 rpm gives you way more emotions than a powerfull diesel.
diesels are calm, you get used to the power very, very soon, and its just like "huh again over 220 km/h". But you didnt feel anything. No sound no thrill no emotions.
Which is god as said if you travel around a lot(maybe with family etc etc). But it has nothing to do with the M philosophy, thats for sure.
