Telsa Model S Plaid test mule down to 7:13 Nurburgring time.

Pretty impressive time so far. And no doubt a low 10 second family sedan in the qtr mile.

Honestly means nothing without knowing what tires, weight loss, etc. Porsche did it in a production model that anyone can buy. All Tesla has announced is the Plaid drivetrain will be an option sometime down the road (we all know how closely Elon sticks to timelines). Do it in a production model (full weight, stock tires, etc) and then I’ll be impressed.

Yes the "Then I will be impressed" statement is someone's reaction. It used to be the Tesla is a "10 sec one trick pony qtr mile car". Everyone said they would be impressed if it could do a decent lap on the Nurburgring. Now that the sedan is lapping quicker than an Enzo, and you know it weighs close to 5000lbs, your still not impressed? So if it does a 7:15 in production form will you be impressed? Perhaps it needs to sprout wings and fly?

Tesla Model S Plaid PROTOTYPE Nurburgring lap time reportedly down to 7:13

There are fanboys running around claiming Tesla is now lapping the Nurburgring 29 seconds quicker than the Taycan. Let's hold off on claiming the Tesla the king of EV Nurburgring sedan performance just yet.

Remember, this whole battle started a few months back but Tesla is not fighting fair. Times are being leaked for a prototype that is not for sale while Porsche is selling a Taycan Turbo S that will do what Porsche says it does on the 'Ring.

7:23 was the last reported/leaked time for this Tesla and Elon Musk certainly is determined to set a record here with the time now reportedly (timed by hand) down to 7:13.

It is not a production car though so everyone relax. Also, Porsche has their 'Project Lion' Panamera lapping the 'Ring in 7:10 so perhaps they have a car in reserve to stick it to Tesla should Elon Musk yap his mouth.

What would make that even more satisfying is that the Project Lion Panamera is not an electric so Porsche would be whooping the Model S with old school internal combustion.

    An entertaining battle, isn't it?

We don't know this, nor do you. All we know is a 4 wheel vehicle with an electric drivetrain that resembles a sedan and no one can buy lapped the ring in 7:13.

Bingo. We know nothing about this car. Musk is the king of hype (remember the “I’ve got investors to take Tesla private” fiasco?), but consistently over promises and under delivers. I’ll wait (likely another 2 years) for the Plaid option to be available and then let’s see where the Porsche production model is at and compare apples to apples.

BTW - not ragging on Tesla. They should be proud they’re even being compared to Porsche. But I do get tired of Musk’s ego writing checks Tesla can’t cash.

Well the prototype has an extra motor and more battery capacity. Do you honestly think it is possible to be much lighter than the current production Model S? A few CFRP panels will not offset that kind of additional equipment.

Like others have said, Elon will do anything for hype. There could be a tube frame chasis under a carbon body... Cue photo of driver getting into fully finished interior. The point is no one knows how close this is to a street car or when the tech will be available to the public.

Do you think Porsche couldn't take 30 seconds off their taycan time if their special ops team was given a green light to double the cars output and go nuts with tires, suspension, and weight reduction?

None of this is an apples to apples comparison.

Yup. Elon is the king of hype. And who could blame him? It's been working so well so far.

Here's a smaller, lighter EV that does 0-186 mph in 10 seconds!

And smog legal, like these exotic EV prototypes running on high octane race electrons, lol. Big factor when comparing race EVs vs Internal Combustion.
