It certainly is a good time to be a car enthusiast and a domestic car enthusiast at that. Ford will debut a successor to their incredible Ford GT (itself an homage to the 1960's GT40 race car) next month in Detroit at the North American International Auto Show.

The Ford GT we all know and love ended production in 2006. How Ford will top their $150k mid-engine 550 horsepower supercar remains to be seen but we expect the new car to be lightweight and sport an all new engine.

A new Ford GT is great news but what makes the news even better is that Ford intends to take it racing. You may remember the 60's Ford GT40 race car which the GT is an homage to spanked Ferrari so hard at Le Mans they quit and went home. The GT40 is famous for winning the 1966, 1967, 1968, and 1969 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Ford will not just race it in Le Mans though but also in the Tudor USCC (United Sports Car Championship) where it will go head to head with Ferrari, Porsche, Chevrolet, and whomever else fields a team in the GT Le Mans class.

Ford intends to completely revamp their performance image and that is something we respect. Not only building a top of the line mid-engine sports car but also racing it at the highest levels of Motorsport.

If you are not convinced the Americans are building the best performance cars in the world you should be now. They just keep getting better.
