The older Quattro AWD system is different then what is available now. Having a good car in the snow is no secret good ground clearance, AWD/4WD, and most importantly WINTER/SNOW TIRES !! Can't stress the last part enough. My daily driver is a range rover evoque it has good ground clearance, high angled front bumper, and land rover tuned AWD system that is basically FWD biased but can be locked at almost 50/50 when put in "snow mode" nothing to crazy and not hard core at all. I'm from NY/NJ last winter was light and I had the stock tires on the car which were summer rated SUV tires the car was absolutely scary to drive and all over the road I actually plowed thru a few intersections with my abs pumping away to no avail. I have a steep driveway and got stuck in about 6 inches of snow I knew something had to be done

if your from the area you know this winter has been extreme with multiple huge snow storms and plenty of smaller snow/ice storms. I put on a set of Blizzak DMV-1 studless snow and ice tires. WOW what a difference ! The truck is a tank and unstoppable I've driven thru every storm no problem plowing my way thru the fast lane that was unplowed while everyone else is going 10 mph with there blinkers on in the right lane I can't explain the difference it made. I have a video of me plowing up my driveway with 20 inches on snow on top of sheets of ice that used to be asphalt. Last year I was stuck in just six inches of powder !! Now if your looking to have a car to take off-road in very deep heavy snow the best recipe is still huge mud tires that are sipped, crazy ground clearance, and a real 4x4 system with front, center, rear lockers

but mud tires are no good for the street they can get you out of huge snow but can't handle or brake like a true snow tire especially blizzaks on ice.

Usually snow tires are M + S meaning mud and snow but you are right, a proper mud tire is only good in the mud.

Nice id like to hear how you feel about the Quattro my fiancé has a S5 with continental DWS tires and while no where close to true winters it's been a capable car and only stayed home when we had the big accumulations. Yes I agree but the M+S is a bit misleading if just going by that. Snow tires would be ok in mud but nothing like a Mud Terrain tire. & vice versa the mud terrain would get moving in the snow but be a mess trying to stop and turn on those smooth tread blocks. It's all about the soft compound, crazy sipes and multiple biting edges. I'm a newb with winter tires this is my first Season and did I sure pick a good one to get them it's been crazy !

about the m+s again my bro in law has a ford raptor and it's a monster huge ground clearance, very very high tapered front bumper, true 4x4 with center and rear diff locks and a front limited slip diff. The car comes with BFGoodrich TA K/O tires that are almost a mix of MUDs and slight winters. They have big tread blocks like MUDs but are slightly siped. The compound is not the super soft of winters and the sipes are nowhere as heavy as my blizzaks & not designed with the same "biting edges". The biggest difference being blizzaks have a sponge like rubber compound that absorbs the water off ice making it much less slippery. He was obviously able to get through the same stuff as me and it's much more capable then my evoque off road but on the road he was slipping and sliding much more while my blizzaks were glued to the snow. Biggest difference was in the braking ! Big 6000 pound truck on those tires took much longer to stop then my 3850 pound crossover on winters.

I will NEVER go another winter without them and will make sure everyone I love doesn't either :-)

In the us especially around ny/nj people rarely drive with winter tires and most are on all seasons or whatever came on the car. That's why I'm so adamant on explaining the tires but it's probably common sense in Canada to get them people are ignorant here! Can't tell you how many cars I saw lose their ass with vehicles/tires that have no business being on the road. Very dangerous when you get one of these knuckleheads in his ford explorer on touring all season tires plowing thru a stop sign

I put 16" snow tires on in the winter, so much better than the run of the mill 18" all seasons my GTI came with. Makes a big difference in a FWD torquey car.

Plus it means I get to have 18" summers. Best of both worlds.

In a few provinces in Canada, winter tires are mandatory from November to April I think. IMO the best 4 season tire is worse in the snow than the worse winter tire. People don't always understand that.

Do they salt the roads in NY/NJ?

I put 16" snow tires on in the winter, so much better than the run of the mill 18" all seasons my GTI came with. Makes a big difference in a FWD torquey car.

Plus it means I get to have 18" summers. Best of both worlds.

Same for me, I used to have a set of steelies for the 325i with winter tires mounted on.



But my A4 has the winter tires mounted on the OEM rims so that gives me an excuse to buy proper summer wheels/tires.

yeah, they salt big time. another reason I love the 16" winter set is I got a nice sidewall (they're also run flats), is that the NJ roads are basically just one giant pothole. Pretty impossible to avoid bubbles/bent wheels with the the normal low profiles.
