Its just the beginning... thats the point. You pick one N engine and act like the "N line" isn't being replaced? It is... I'm sure they will announce that replacement too. The S engines aren't being touched as far as i know. So the N20 had a run of 2 years...strange imo. I don't get why bmw is changing to the B series engines so quickly. They are also calling the car a 340 instead of a 335, and 440... etc.

The N line is a long list of motors. You act like they are all about to be gone, they aren't.
What are they going to replace the V8 with?
The S engine is based on the N engine anyway.

Who knows what they will replace the v8 with. The B series seems to be a replacement for N and will eventually replace them all. Here is a quote from a article in auto evolution.com, I posted earlier.... "Well, the F30 platform will turn 3 next year and a deserved LCI is on schedule, as usual. The facelift, however, will not only focus on exterior design changes but it will also introduce a lot of new technology and, according to a BMW insider, a brand new set of engines.
These new units will be wearing the ‘B’ codename, replacing the ’N’ engine family completely. We’re already seeing these units introduced today, on cars like the new Cooper S and the Active Tourer but, for now, the 3 Series range will continue using the N20 and N55 petrol versions.
The B48 and B58 engines will be used on the new 320i and 335i, with an obvious power increase. Most likely, the 320i will have 192 HP and 300 Nm of torque, more than the 184 and 270 Nm of today’s model. As for the 335i expect it to go up to around 340 HP and 500 Nm of torque, as the same engine will be used on the LCI M235i later on."

I see what you are posting but once again I don't see anything about an N63 replacement any time soon. There also are a couple other N motors that won't be getting replaced soon...

no i'm saying they will make other b series engines that have similar power/displacement as the V8's that will replace the n63 and n74, i'm not saying what I showed will replace them. What I showed is a example of the n series engines going by the wayside

They all are ... your wrong, admit it. God damn you love to argue. You originally said the n55 wasnt, then the n20, both are...then you grasped and found the n63 wasn't mentioned in the replacement.... Maybe the V8 is replaced next year, but its coming.....

I'm not arguing I'm pointing out the N motor diversity is pretty big and what you showed me had nothing to do with replacing the V8's or V12.
Ok, so they want the Mini B-series architecture to be cheaper, and? We don't know what will happen with the N20 architecture or the other N motors just yet.
Additionally, you are wrong about BMW quickly replacing motors as pointed out some engine families stay around for more than a decade. Like which ones?
Take the N series. There are almost no interchangeable parts between the N20, N26, N52, N54 and N55. Each N5x engine has a unique block, head and pistons from the other in the "series." They only thing they share is the basic combustion chamber configuration and the initial letter N in each engines series name. Other than that, each N5x engine is a vastly different engine. The N20 and N26 differences I am not well versed about.
Same for the S series, but even more so.

The N54 and N55 are pretty similar designs. They're the same basic architecture I'm not sure how the block differs if it even does? Bore x stroke is the same as well.

Next gen Z4 will be available initially with non-hybrid turbo 6-cylinder. So rwd as well.
AutoMotor und Sport is reporting that new next Z4/Toyota project WILL have a turbo six gasoline engine.
BMW spokesman Kai Lichte said:
Whether the hybrid powertrain is also used in the BMW, or whether the Z4 gets four-wheel drive, but it was "too early to talk about it," as the BMW spokesman told an Australian newspaper says. "First, we will have a six-cylinder, that's for sure. Everything else comes later maybe."
