Porsche 918 Spyder test numbers from MotorTrend - Curb weight, 1/4 mile, 0-60, etc.

Great data here from MotorTrend who had a tough day at the office testing a Porsche 918 Spyder. By now you know that the 918 Spyder is the highest performance car Porsche has ever produced and that it is a mid-engine all wheel drive hybrid. The car has a 608 horsepower 13.5:1 compression 4.6 liter V8 that revs to 9150 rpm and is supplanted by two electric motors up front delivering 285 horsepower.

The combined output of the hybrid drivetrain is 887 horsepower and 826 lb-ft of torque. 431 lb-ft of which comes from the electric motors and as the max torque is instant in the electric the performance off the line is phenomenal. 0-60 comes in 2.4 seconds which makes one wonder how much more manufacturers can improve this figure. The 1/4 mile flashes by in 10.0 second flat at 145.2 miles per hour.

Yep, it is stupid fast and what makes this even more impressive is that the numbers are achieved with a 3791 pound curb weight. This car is not a lightweight but another way to look at it is that it is roughly 700 pounds lighter than a Bugatti Veyron but just as quick and fast as the Super Sport model. For reference, Road and Track got a 9.9 @ 145.8 1/4 mile out of the Veyron Super Sport. You can also read a previous acceleration comparison article between the two cars here although they were not tested on the same day.

So the Porsche 918 is as fast as a Veyron SS, lighter, handles better, and is roughly half the price while offering incredible efficiency. This car is a hell of a step forward.

I wish magazines would include the 60' time with their 1/4 mile numbers. Car is still bonkers, looks like the P1 edges it out in trap speed. Be interesting to see a manufacturer put out a car that can do 150mph in the 1/4 mile, the P1 might even do that on a cold day since it's so close.

There's a lot of things I wish magazines would do differently but I don't even think they use dragstrips any longer. It's all GPS software testing now.

It's going to be fun to see the inevitable LaFerrari vs. P1 vs. 918 comparison.

Preliminary figures so far suggest that the P1 is only marginally faster than the 918 and much heavier than McLaren said it would be. C&D got some even more insane figures for the 918, 2.2 to 60, I believe about 4.9 to 100, and 1/4 mile in 9.8 at over 145. Just mind-blowing. And this wasn't a Weissach car. They claim that should be good for a tenth everywhere pretty much. And might be good for a mph or so in the trap.

Easily my favorite of the three, although the sound the LF makes is just out of this world.

Interesting is the 0-100 mph times, just insane, but even a 650S is doing it in 5.5 seconds.... a little tuning and catless it may get to 5.1 or so.

Why we review these cars like the P1 and La ferrari that you have to be INVITED to buy is beyond me. Even multi-trillionaires like the MLB Pitcher CJ Wilson who is a real rev head cannot get into these ultra cars as they won't sell one to him

But assuming we could buy one

I've often thought that too - eventually they'll hit the limits of physics. But considering a top fuel dragster can go 0-100mph in less than a second, I think they have some room to go, especially with the advancements in tire technology, AWD, traction/launch control, etc. But at some point the G forces will be too much for an average person to take (or the manufacturers' lawyers Click here to enlarge) - that might end up being the limit.

Why do we want to see girls naked that we can't screw?
