The Bentley L-Series V8 has been in production since 1959. Yes, this same basic design is still going strong although it obviously has received updates along the way. Since its introduction both Rolls Royce and Bentley used the motor in over four decades of cars but today it only powers the Bentley Mulsanne.

The Mulsanne of course being the top of the line model in the Bentley lineup targets a buyer likely aware of the marque history and pedigree. Hence the connection to Bentley's past with the L-Series V8 while the Continental models are downsizing the displacement with Audi derived powerplants and why Bentley will keep using the motor.

Considering a Mulsanne will set you back roughly $300k it definitely is a bit of an acquired taste in the Bentley lineup compared to the 'entry level' Continental GT V8. Plus, even though the trend is to go smaller for emissions Bentley is not producing a high volume economy car here. With its link to Bentley's past plus potent power (check out a dyno here, 676 lb-ft of wheel torque and 474 wheel horsepower) we hope they never get rid of it.
