As for mechanical failures, had an oem lifter issue around 40k, took out the stock cam, I swapped in some cadillac racing lifters, these were hit or miss as I found out later, they went bad also and took out another cam about 50k miles. I then went to the LS7 lifter which is the current oem replacement. been running this setup for about 60k now. so that's the recipe or my bad luck ended.
I had put a 6 puck clutch in it at about 40k, and I always had disengagement issues with it. the results was took a toll on my synchros. had to replace 3-4 and did a couple upgrade while i was in the trans. I went McCloud twin disk, shift like butter now. But I never been on a tow truck. I typically drive it till it makes weird noises or vibrations.
Just find the recipe, I have about 110k miles on mine now, and it take the beating like a champ.
