Tuned 997.2 Turbo vs. a stock 2015 458 Speciale and 458 Italia from a roll

The 458 Italia is not built for roll on racing and neither is the hardcore Speciale version. That does not mean the 458 does not perform well from a roll. The Speciale in particular which receives a power boost to 597 horsepower from the 458 Italia's 562 horsepower 4.5 liter naturally aspirated V8 and weighs 90 pounds less for a total roughly in the ~3200 pound range. So how do these two cars do against a tuned 997.2 Turbo?

Both cars are lighter than the 997.2 turbo and both send their power to the rear wheels instead all four like the 911 Turbo. All three have dual clutch transmissions. The lighter weight of the 458's pays dividends when the cars first get on the gas allowing a small lead. The Speciale of course pulls past the standard 458 showing it is the faster car of the two.

Once the 911's turbos spool and it gets going though its horsepower and torque advantage simply takes over. All the car has is bolt on modifications courtesy of a tune, exhaust, and air filter but that is all the 997.2 Turbo needs to win this race. On a roadcourse this would be a different story but in a straight line the two Ferrari's simply can't compete with a tuned 997.2 Turbo.

The engine in the 458 Speciale is utterly ridiculous, and to improve on the 458 the way they did was no small feat. Good race, pretty good results considering NA vs FI.

Check out the differences between the "regular" 458 and the Speciale:Click here to enlarge

    Pretty impressive difference in 0-200kph (0-124 MPH) - 11.6s vs 9.1s - and 1.33 lateral gs!

Overall, I would have to take the p-car for a daily, but if I could have any Ferrari currently in production, that would be it.

    Cheers.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Ferrari claimed the weight as 1290kg (2844lb) dry and 1395kg (3075lb) curb. I had to wikipedia what curb vs dry is for the EU, and it seems like motorcycles confuse the entire thing, but it's an almost senseless figure to claim when you have things like DSG/Dry Sump/etc. - and maybe 80 kg. of "driver stuff". Point is, it doesn't make much sense to give the weight of a car that doesn't function (no fluids), but it seems like a lot of manufacturers do this.

Makes things confusing - considering they have standards, they should make the standards so it's easy to compare across different makes and models. Still, a very lightweight car - but not sure why they even do this. Any ideas?

I think the reasoning is to make the weight look more impressive on paper.

    BMW pulled this same nonsense.

The Speciale has "fins" on the side (don't know what else to call them) - and also has a different hood:Click here to enlarge
