DTM 2014 - BMW starts the DTM season with a victory, Mercedes AMG does not place in top 10

The 2014 DTM season is officially underway! The first race of the year took place today at the Hockenheim in Germany. BMW starts the year off well with a victory but Audi took the other two spots on the podium. The top 10 cars were all from BMW and Audi with Audi taking four out of ten and BMW taking six out of ten. Mercedes AMG struggled with 11th place being the top finish for a Mercedes car. Ouch.

This is just the beginning of the season and we saw back in 2012 that anything can happen. For now, BMW is ahead of Mercedes and Audi. The next race takes place in two weeks in Germany at the Oschersleben Motorsport Arena.

Jens Marquardt, Motorsport Director, BMW: “A fantastic result and a great debut for the new BMW M4 DTM. Marco Wittmann has shown an impressive performance and scored a deserved maiden victory in the DTM. This is only his second year in this series, so this success is all the more impressive. Six of our cars in the top ten, that is brilliant.”

Dieter Gass, head of DTM, Audi: “It was a good race for Audi. The fact that we got three cars into the top four, and with different strategies on top of that, speaks for our new RS 5 DTM. Victory was within reach, too, but Marco Wittmann was extremely strong this weekend. Congratulations to him, but above all to our guys. We all have tough weeks behind us. We can build on this result and we are already looking forward to Oschersleben.”

Wolfgang Schattling, head of DTM management, Mercedes-Benz: “Our performance level was by no means where it should be. It just wasn’t right. We have to get back to work so that we can show a better performance in the next races.”

I don't really follow DTM, how many manufacturers are represented? And I know the M4 DTM is basically nothing M4, unlike the previous Z4 correct? Does this hold true for Audi, and MB?

They all basically race the same thing. It's German NASCAR.

    It's Audi, MB, and BMW.

Ok, makes sense now. So motors are fairly universal, built by each team but under same restrictions/specs?

Interesting stuff. I'm trying to branch out and get into watching some different racing, especially now that so much stuff is being televised thanks to NBC Sports Network. Good to see all the F1 races
