Volkswagen to give diesels the 'R' treatment, GTD R Golf with 442 lb-ft of torque possibly on the way
Volkswagen likes its diesels and rightfully so. They make some great motors that offer tremendous torque from a fuel efficient package. Volkswagen makes a sporty diesel model in the Golf GTD. The MKVII Golf GTD may make its way over to the United States although this is not officially confirmed. With its 280 pound-feet of torque from the 2.0 liter turbo diesel motor it moves well but imagine a GTD R with 442 lb-ft of torque.
That is what is being reported as a possibility for an RD line of cars. This is not officially confirmed but reports state that the Golf will get the RD treatment and and a pair of twin-scroll turbochargers will give the 2.0 liter EA288 diesel motor a big bump over the GTD.
What the horsepower figure will rise to is anyone's guess at this point although clearly it will not rival the Golf R in raw power. The GTD currently has 180 horses so a bump into the ~250 horse range is certainly a possibility. This would also be a tuner's dream.
Do not get too excited as even if this comes the chances of it making it to the United States are slim. Which is a shame, because this is the exact kind of thing we need from VW.

WOW on a small box like the GOLF. The BMW 335d is an I6 twin Turbo Diesel and on OEM figure its pumping 268 Hp and 425 lbs toque. I gather it will get somewhat around 27 mpg city and a WHOOPING 40 mpg hwy!! BMW 335d is rated at 23 mpg city and 36 mpg Hwy.
