Is BMW planning to bring a performance M diesel version of the X4 to market? X4 50d coming?

BMW has some pretty sweet diesel motors out there. The sweetest of which sports a tri-turbo setup on a 3.0 liter inline-6 which produces 381 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque. This motor goes into the M550d, X5 M50d, and the X6 M50d. What do these all cars have in common other than their diesel powertrain? That they are not available in the USA. So do not fault BimmerBoost for not being too excited about the prospect of an X4 M50d model.

BMW of course is intent on bringing the X4 to market and it will be sold in the USA which is why BMW showed it off at the LA Auto Show. BMW intends to compete against the Macan with the X4 but really this model would make more sense going up against the Audi SQ5 diesel. That vehicle has a 313 horsepower and and 479 pound-feet of torque twin turbo diesel motor.

BMW seems to be on the fence whether to produce this car, "We already have in Europe the 5-series sedan and estate M50d. But there are plans to expand the diesel M offering. I think where there might be potential is in the new X4, which we’ll be bringing in next year." Those words come from the BMW Australia Marketing Director Phil Horton. His words essentially boil to a maybe.

What is most likely to happen is BMW will take their lower end inline-6 diesel motor which is available in the USA, stick it in the X4, add some M badging and 'performance' parts, and call it a day. Would an X4 50d be awesome? Yes it would. However, considering BMW would not bring an X4 50d to the USA anyway BimmerBoost will not shed any tears over what will never be for sale in its home market.
